OTAVALO HANDICRAFTS MARKET 1 DAY

The Otavalo Market is the most famous Indigenous market both in Ecuador and Worldwide, known for its fine clothing and handicrafts.

The “Otavaleños” are the indigenous people that live in the Otavalo Valley, in the Province of Imbabura in Northern Ecuador. The Otavaleños are a very prosperous community of skilled textile workers, who gather to sell their products at the market in the city of Otavalo as they have for centuries. Regional markets have played an important role in Indigenous life, providing regular gathering places for trade and socialization.

A major aspect of Otavalo’s Indigenous ethnic identity is their native clothing. For men this consists of a blue poncho, white shirt and calf-length trousers, a fedora-type hat and their hair tied in a long braid. Women dress in embroidered blouses, blue skirts and shawls plus several layers of golden necklaces and red bead bracelets. Both men and women wear “alpargatas”, a type of sandal.

We depart Northward from Quito, via Cayambe, across the Equator line, enjoy breathtaking views of the nearby volcanoes. We make a stop at the San Pablo Lake’s observation point to get a view of the Imbabura volcano and the beautiful San Pablo Lake below. We continue to have a walk through the open-air Otavalo Market. In the afternoon, we will visit the town of Cotacachi where leather crafts are made and Cuicocha Lake.
