Day 1 Manta – Pacoche Howler Monkeys trail – Puerto Lopez

Depart Quito in an early morning flight to the seaport city of Manta. Pick up at the airport and we travel to the Pacoche reserve, located approximately 45 minutes from Manta. Here we explore the last remnants of the Tropical Forest on the shore of the Pacific Ocean and take a hike in the woods of this pristine forest, this is not only beautiful, but we learn much about the local plants and the famous residents the Black Howler Monkeys, you may hear them calling loudly and clearly in the distance. We later enjoy lunch along the beach eating delicious ‘local’ seafood. If time permits we can also include a visit to the San Lorenzo Light house and get views of the coastal line. We continue to Puerto Lopez our last stop to rest and enjoy the hotel facilities, afternoon for leisure. Overnight in the area.

Day 2: Los Frailes pristine beach

After breakfast we visit the secluded white sand beach of the beautiful Los Frailes. You can walk along the beach on the far side where there is a trail up to the lookout point with gorgeous views, lots of wildlife and sunshine, the water temperature, the scenery, the quiet environment, all of this make it a wonderful retreat from everything. For sports enthusiasts you can snorkel, jog along the 2 mile coast or swim the 1.5 miles line between each side of the peninsula.

Please bear in mind that this is a pristine beach, no vendors or anything of the like, there is no shade and we recommend bringing snacks and water with you because aside from an ice cream vendor in the parking lot, there is nowhere to eat here but in town. Return to Puerto Lopez around noon, afternoon for leisure. Overnight in the area.

Day 3: Isla de la Plata Full Day & Whale Watching*

Today we recommend having a light breakfast, because of the navigation day ahead of us. Navigation time is estimated at 2 hours approx. depending on weather conditions. We depart to Puerto Lopez pier to get on board the speed boats to Isla de la Plata to reach this uninhabited beautiful island. Isla de la Plata offers two hikes on well-designed paths and snorkeling opportunities. Snorkeling is beautiful as you see many fish and even sea turtles if you’re lucky. The most common bird is the blue-footed booby, but you also see the red-footed one, the masked booby, frigates and a few more species, and sometimes you may see sea lions gathering in the rocks near the shore. Enjoy a delicious box lunch. The nature here is unspoiled since it is a national park and entrance is only allowed with a guide. All in all, it is a very beautiful island, still a nice substitute for those who don’t have time to visit the Galapagos. Return to Puerto Lopez in the late afternoon and overnight in the area.

During the whale watching season (from July through September), this activity is done on the way to the Isla de la Plata.

Day 4 Agua Blanca eco-village and continue to your next destination

Today we have a delicious early breakfast and then we visit the eco-village and archeological site of Agua Blanca, located on the Spondylus Route/Trail which is all along the coast and follows the tracks of the Indian civilizations that once lived here. If you’re not into archaeological sites or community projects, you can always go to the sulfur baths for a natural spa treatment in the surroundings of the dry forest. This is a peaceful excursion. Enjoy the feeling of walking in the shade of trees and feeling the breeze on a hot day. Fences made out of tree trimmings complete the picturesque scenery. Return to Manta or continue onto your next destination.
